Label unwind direction: chart and approval checklist

PUBLISHED 18 JUL 2026 8 MIN READ BY

Use an unwind chart to communicate clearly, then approve the drawing with the converter and the operator who will run the labels.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Specify two things: printed face in or out, and which artwork edge leads. Numbered charts vary. Attach the supplier chart and an annotated drawing, and get approval for the actual application line.

Specify the printed face and the leading artwork edge

Label unwind direction describes how the printed labels face on the roll and which edge of the artwork leads as the web feeds. Record both. “Top first” means the top of the approved artwork, not whichever edge happens to be at the top of a photograph.

The applicator setup and product presentation determine the required orientation. Ask the operator or co-packer to approve it for the named line. Use this guide alongside the label printing buyer guide.

Read an unwind chart without relying on the number alone

The interactive chart below shows four artwork edges for each face orientation. Its numbers follow the common converter chart and the PackOS order form: 3 and 7 are right edge first, 4 and 8 are left edge first. Some suppliers assign different numbers, and some read left and right relative to the direction of the text rather than the label, so confirm the supplier's chart and revision before putting a number on a purchase order.

EXAMPLE #1 — TOP OF COPY COMES OFF THE ROLL FIRST

This is an orientation schematic, not a machine threading diagram. The faded label indicates a printed face pointing inward; it does not show an actual liner path. Use the applicator manufacturer's drawing for threading.

Write “printed face out, right edge of approved artwork first,” attach the drawing, and add the corresponding number from the agreed supplier chart. Resolve any disagreement between the number, words and drawing before release.

Outside wound and inside wound

  • Wound out: the label face points toward the outside of the wound roll.
  • Wound in: the label face points toward the core; the liner faces outward.

Face orientation alone does not specify the leading artwork edge. Likewise, a photo showing the web leaving over or under a roll does not establish the complete specification. Label both face orientation and artwork direction on the approved drawing.

Unwind is one part of the complete roll specification

Also confirm core inner diameter, maximum roll outside diameter, web width, label size along and across the feed, gap, count, weight and any splice limits. Match the exact equipment model and setup; there is no universal core size for every applicator.

Keep these dimensions and tolerances in the roll specification checklist. Changing artwork orientation can change which label dimension runs along the web, so have the converter review the layout and count together.

Get operator approval with an annotated drawing

  1. Identify the destination. Record the application site, line and operator or co-packer contact.
  2. Use the equipment requirements. Obtain the applicable manual or approved line specification. A known working roll can support the review.
  3. Mark the artwork. Show its top, bottom, left and right; add a feed arrow and identify the edge that leads.
  4. State the face orientation. Write printed face in or out and reference the supplier's chart revision.
  5. Confirm the first article. Agree who approves the sample roll and application trial before the production release.

For front and back labels, multiple lines or multiple co-packers, record a separate approved specification for each component and destination. A shared design does not prove that the unwind requirements match.

Resolve unwind mismatches before the production run

A mismatch can cause incorrect artwork orientation, feeding problems or rework. If a delivered roll differs from the approved drawing, hold it for supplier and operator review. Do not assume the machine can compensate or that a simple rewind will fix every error.

The remedy depends on the roll construction, artwork orientation and available converting equipment. Confirm feasibility, handling, costs and a revised sample before accepting a rework plan. Rewinding alone cannot rotate artwork by a quarter turn relative to the web.

Hand application still has handling requirements

A person can often rotate a peeled label, making artwork orientation more flexible than on an automated line. A dispenser may still impose core, roll diameter, winding and handling limits. Approve a comfortable, compatible roll instead of assuming every stock format will work.

When moving to machine application or a co-packer, reapprove the specification. “Same as last time” is insufficient if the application method or site changed.

Keep unwind approval with each SKU and release

  • SKU and label component, artwork file and revision
  • Printed face in/out and artwork edge first
  • Supplier chart reference and annotated drawing
  • Approved roll dimensions, count and tolerances
  • Application site, line, approver and approval date
  • Sample-trial result and any open conditions

Use the enterprise SKU and release worksheets to keep specifications tied to quantities and destinations. Reconfirm after changes to artwork, material, equipment or supplier.

Prepare the unwind requirements for your label quote

Start with known label details and keep an unconfirmed unwind marked as an open decision. Artwork alone does not determine the application's feed path. Have the supplier and operator approve the complete specification before production.

Start a label quote or use the enterprise roll-label buying guide to prepare a multi-SKU program.

Document the printed face orientation and leading artwork edge. Use the approved equipment drawing to confirm the actual feed path.

Frequently asked questions

What does label unwind direction mean?

It identifies the printed face orientation on the roll and which artwork edge leads as the web feeds. State printed face in or out plus top, bottom, left or right edge of the approved artwork first.

Is unwind position 3 always right edge first?

No. Numbers depend on the chart being used. This page uses 3 for right edge first, wound out, matching the PackOS order form and the common converter chart; some suppliers use a different mapping. Confirm the supplier chart and include words and an annotated drawing.

How do I choose the right unwind for a co-packer?

Ask the operator to approve it for the named site and application line. Provide the artwork revision, face orientation, leading edge and complete roll dimensions. Record the chart reference and sample-trial requirements.

Are wound out and top first the same thing?

No. Wound out describes which way the printed face points on the roll. Top first describes the artwork edge that leads. A complete unwind specification needs both.

Can rewinding fix an incorrect unwind?

Sometimes, but the converter and operator must confirm the remedy for the actual roll and equipment. Rewinding alone cannot rotate artwork by a quarter turn relative to the web. Approve any rework and revised sample before use.

Does unwind matter for hand-applied labels?

A person can often rotate the peeled label, but dispensers and handling still impose requirements. Confirm core size, roll diameter, winding and weight. Reapprove the specification when moving to machine application.

Should I use the same unwind for every SKU?

Only if it has been approved for each label component and destination line. Different artwork layouts, applicators or co-packers may require different specifications. Keep the approved drawing with each SKU and release.
